Summary

Products, technologies, and workplaces change so quickly today that everyone is continually learning。 Many of us are also teaching, even when it's not in our job descriptions。 Whether it's giving a presentation, writing documentation, or creating a website or blog, we need and want to share our knowledge with other people。 But if you've ever fallen asleep over a boring textbook, or fast-forwarded through a tedious e-learning exercise, you know that creating a great learning experience is harder than it seems。 In Design For How People Learn, Second Edition, you'll discover how to use the key principles behind learning, memory, and attention to create materials that enable your audience to both gain and retain the knowledge and skills you're sharing。 Updated to cover new insights and research into how we learn and remember, this new edition includes new techniques for using social media for learning as well as two brand new chapters on designing for habit and best practices for evaluating learning, such as how and when to use tests。 Using accessible visual metaphors and concrete methods and examples, Design For How People Learn, Second Edition will teach you how to leverage the fundamental concepts of instructional design both to improve your own learning and to engage your audience。

Julie Dirksen's Design for How People Learn brings together the cognitive science and lots of professional experience to the instructional course design methodologies。 There is plenty general information that will be useful not only for professional trainers, but also to any educators and even for self-learning。This goes hand-in-hand with another great book "Map it" by Cathy Moore。 Julie Dirksen's Design for How People Learn brings together the cognitive science and lots of professional experience to the instructional course design methodologies。 There is plenty general information that will be useful not only for professional trainers, but also to any educators and even for self-learning。This goes hand-in-hand with another great book "Map it" by Cathy Moore。 。。。more

There were a lot of takeaways for me from this read but it also fell into the category of books I find challenging to make actionable。 I call it "1,ooo Things to Keep in Mind When You Are _____"。 These books are crammed with great information but are so broad and unfocused that it is difficult to walk away with a clear picture of what you will do, think, or say differently as a result。 There were a lot of takeaways for me from this read but it also fell into the category of books I find challenging to make actionable。 I call it "1,ooo Things to Keep in Mind When You Are _____"。 These books are crammed with great information but are so broad and unfocused that it is difficult to walk away with a clear picture of what you will do, think, or say differently as a result。 。。。more

A good book and good ideas but since I'd already read Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning it felt a bit more of a revision than original material。 A good book and good ideas but since I'd already read Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning it felt a bit more of a revision than original material。 。。。more

Highly recommended for any HR professional interested/pursuing L&D or Instructional design。 This is level 1 sort of reading。Very easy to read and information is sticky。 It doesn't read like a novel, more like a graphic novel。 Highly recommended for any HR professional interested/pursuing L&D or Instructional design。 This is level 1 sort of reading。Very easy to read and information is sticky。 It doesn't read like a novel, more like a graphic novel。 。。。more

This is a very easy to read, down to earth book that I have gone to many times over the years。

Fantastic introduction to how to design effective learning experiences。 She cites sources and recommends additional reading, which I always appreciate。 Accessible to those new to the field, and a fun refresher read even if you've been designing training for years。 Over the years, I've recommended this book to several people who are interested in instructional design。 Fantastic introduction to how to design effective learning experiences。 She cites sources and recommends additional reading, which I always appreciate。 Accessible to those new to the field, and a fun refresher read even if you've been designing training for years。 Over the years, I've recommended this book to several people who are interested in instructional design。 。。。more

Hands down the best design resource I've ever read。 The examples are engaging and work equally well as reminders for seasoned designers, or as new information for those who lack formal training in learning design。 I've been recommending it all over the place, including my former employer。 Hands down the best design resource I've ever read。 The examples are engaging and work equally well as reminders for seasoned designers, or as new information for those who lack formal training in learning design。 I've been recommending it all over the place, including my former employer。 。。。more

Multiple examples of how to design different kinds of learning experiences, but it gets repetitive in the last 5-6 chapters。

As a trained Waldorf teacher who is now in the corporate world and responsible for spreading data literacy throughout my company, this has been my favorite resource about adult learning。 The many pictures and charts worked well for my visual learning style。 And the analogies nicely explained some important concepts (including the benefits of using analogies!)When I suddenly had to revise my in-person workshops to virtual format, this book provided language to help me convince presenters that the As a trained Waldorf teacher who is now in the corporate world and responsible for spreading data literacy throughout my company, this has been my favorite resource about adult learning。 The many pictures and charts worked well for my visual learning style。 And the analogies nicely explained some important concepts (including the benefits of using analogies!)When I suddenly had to revise my in-person workshops to virtual format, this book provided language to help me convince presenters that they should continue to prioritize participant interaction, even if it was hard to figure out how to adjust。 This book will stay at the top of my pile for easy reference until I have memorized it! 。。。more

Although this book mainly focuses on corporate training, it offers create advice on designing learning experiences for adults in higher ed as well。 Definitely a book to have on hand when developing courses。 Excellent accessible design similar to Don’t Make Me Think with lots of concrete examples based on sound learning theory。

Five stars if you’re INTO learning about learning of teaching。 It’s really great, thorough, and validating。 Covers research and has lots of examples。 So many stock photos but forgivable。 I wanted to highlight like every other sentencesentence

This book has been on my to-read list for a while。 It’s a bit too much like a text book to get a five, but the book is a solid intro to learning and the implications for teaching。 If I ever teach educational psychology again, this will be a much better text to use than the traditional textbooks。

How to understand learners? How do we remember? How to design learning experience for knowledge, a skill, motivation, or habits? All these topics are wittily detailed in this book, also with amusing visuals。 I highly recommend this interesting book to all educators, trainers, and L&D specialists。

Awesome book!

Much appreciated。 Condensed more academic stuffy theory into fun doodles and scenarios。 Learned a lot!

I think this book could be valuable in a business, marketing, or design environment; however, I was required to read this for an Education course and found the specific examples and techniques to be less than helpful。 I don’t believe this illustrates anything faulty with the material, but, rather, the direction of my professor。

Nadia

Very thorough, easy to read, great for understanding how people learn in regards to training/ eLearning

Julie Dirksen’s book has a beautiful design, reads easily, is accompanied by pictographs for easier remembering and illustration and is highly informational on designing learning experiences for adults。 It will be difficult to reading other types of books, after this one。If you want to learn anything on designing workshops, training, even classes, curriculum or any other learning experience, start here。 It’s a very enjoyable book :)

One of the best books I've read on instructional Design。 Only the end felt a bit rushed, and the chapters were less useful。 But especially the first 2/3rd of the book was awesome。 One of the best books I've read on instructional Design。 Only the end felt a bit rushed, and the chapters were less useful。 But especially the first 2/3rd of the book was awesome。 。。。more

This was a great intro to Designing learning material that I will be referring back to often, I can already tell。

This book offers specific and actionable advice on how to approach myriad curriculum design and course development ideas。 I found it hugely useful both as a how-to reference and as a thought provoking resource to help me look for new and more effective ways to engage and educate。

This is a great and accessible overview of learning design。 It really helps me because it emphasizes adult learners over children, so if that is your case I would recommend it。 Dirksen's focus on workplace learning also helped provide me with a perspective I lacked。 This is a great and accessible overview of learning design。 It really helps me because it emphasizes adult learners over children, so if that is your case I would recommend it。 Dirksen's focus on workplace learning also helped provide me with a perspective I lacked。 。。。more

I've been on a binge of books about presentations/teaching to adults/visual teaching etc。。。 They are all a little different, so I'm not sure how I would lump them all together as a category。 But I'm going to say that this book was by far the most helpful to me。 It was also the least literal。 If you are looking for specific examples of how to teach, you might be disappointed。 But it's a great book to help you visualize how people learn。 I'd also recommend "Made To Stick" by the Heath brothers if I've been on a binge of books about presentations/teaching to adults/visual teaching etc。。。 They are all a little different, so I'm not sure how I would lump them all together as a category。 But I'm going to say that this book was by far the most helpful to me。 It was also the least literal。 If you are looking for specific examples of how to teach, you might be disappointed。 But it's a great book to help you visualize how people learn。 I'd also recommend "Made To Stick" by the Heath brothers if you are looking for more reading about adult learners。 。。。more

I read this for a book club at work; it was highly effective at generating meaningful conversations amongst my coworkers and helped us to recognize a shared definition of what constitutes quality work in our field。 It's geared towards instructional design in a corporate environment, but the content would be applicable to anyone involved in learning & development and/or adult learning。Very little information was presented that I haven't already heard, but it was organized in a way that will make I read this for a book club at work; it was highly effective at generating meaningful conversations amongst my coworkers and helped us to recognize a shared definition of what constitutes quality work in our field。 It's geared towards instructional design in a corporate environment, but the content would be applicable to anyone involved in learning & development and/or adult learning。Very little information was presented that I haven't already heard, but it was organized in a way that will make it an valuable reference tool。 I also walked away feeling more confident when dicussing the needs of our learners with SMEs, stakeholders and upper management。 There were a number of specific real world examples backed up by research which I can add to my arsenal to better influence design principals and teaching strategies。 。。。more
